Overactivity and Poor Concentration
Sometimes, everyone has trouble focusing or sitting still, but when these problems are constant and really get in the way of learning and everyday life, it might be a sign of something like Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
What is ADD and ADHD?
ADD and ADHD are conditions that make it hard to pay attention, stay still, or control impulses. They can make it difficult to concentrate in class, complete tasks, and get along with others.
These conditions often start before you turn 12 and can affect you in different places, like at home and at school. They are not just about being rebellious or having a mood swing. Identifying them early can help you get the right support and make things easier for you.
Identifying the Signs
ADD and ADHD can look different depending on your age, but here are some common signs:
- Restlessness: Can’t sit still or always fidgeting.
- Talking a Lot: Interrupting conversations or talking non-stop.
- Distraction: Easily sidetracked or having trouble focusing on tasks.
- Following Instructions: Having trouble listening to and completing instructions.
- Social Skills: Difficulty taking turns or interacting smoothly with others.
- Impulsivity: Acting or speaking without thinking it through.
If you’re struggling with these issues, you might also have problems with:
- Schoolwork: Missing details, starting tasks before fully understanding them, or having trouble organising your assignments.
- Exams: Finding it hard to revise or focus during tests.
What to Do
If you think you might have ADD or ADHD, talking to a school counsellor or a trusted adult can be a good first step. They can help you get the right support and strategies to manage these challenges.
