Low Mood or Depression

Low Mood or Depression

Feeling down sometimes is totally normal. Everyone, including young people, can feel sad or upset about different things.

What is Depression?

Sometimes, feeling sad doesn’t just go away or might get worse over time. If you’re feeling low for a long period, it might be more serious than just a temporary mood dip. This could be depression, where you might see yourself or the future in a negative light, feel hopeless, or feel like you’re not yourself anymore.

Signs of Depression

If you or someone you know is struggling with depression, you might notice:

  • Being moody or irritable: Easily upset or annoyed more than usual.
  • Losing interest: Not caring about things you used to enjoy or find fun.
  • Avoiding school or going out: Not wanting to participate in activities or leave the house.
  • Feeling tired: Always feeling exhausted or having no energy.
  • Withdrawing: Pulling away from friends and family, and spending more time alone.
  • Feeling sad or tearful: Regularly feeling unhappy, miserable, or crying more often.
  • Sleep issues: Either having trouble sleeping or sleeping way too much.
  • Changes in appetite: Eating a lot more or a lot less than usual.
  • Being self-critical: Harshly judging yourself or feeling worthless.
  • Feeling hopeless: Believing that things won’t get better or feeling stuck.

If you notice these signs in yourself or a friend, it’s important to talk to someone you trust or seek help. Depression can be really tough, but there are people who can support you and help you through it.
